A little slice of fall
As the temperatures drop and the leaves turn, fall settles in: a season of comfort, family dinners and holidays. For us, food is a big part of what makes this time of year feel special.
One of Phoenix’s favorite fall memories is simple: an apple pie going into the oven right before dinner, so it would come out warm just in time for dessert. Watching Grandma mix the filling and weave the crust was half the fun.
Why we started Pies for People
We’re Phoenix Capra and Rhikeishi Lee, two students at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
Baking a pie from scratch takes time, and it can be stressful during a busy season. Not everyone has someone at home to make one for every occasion. Some of our neighbors face a bigger challenge: they don’t have a home, or they aren’t sure where their next meal will come from.
We started Pies for People to bring that warm-pie-after-dinner feeling to more tables, including the ones that need it most.
Pielanthropy: buy a pie, give a meal
Every pie we sell is part of Pielanthropy, our giving program. Shelters often can’t accept homemade baked goods because of allergen concerns, so instead of donating pies, we give money. Part of every pie you buy goes toward a meal for a neighbor in need.
You get a warm apple pie for your table, and someone in the Twin Cities gets a meal.
